This video explains briefly the role of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the region as a promoter of clean and sustainable energy

global energy needs have increased from year to year meanwhile access to traditional energy sources mainly dependent on fossil fuels costs more and more ironically countries that have extraordinary potential to produce clean energy through renewable resources are the ones that have more energy deficits and are more dependent on fossil fuels our African sub-region is a paradigmatic example for instance a total of twenty-three thousand megawatts of hydropower potential in the sub-region is concentrated in five of the 15 member states of the Economic Community of West African states ecowas with only sixteen percent of that potential having been explored the sub-region also has extraordinary potential for exploring other types of renewable energy including biomass wind solar and ocean energy not to mention the extraordinary solar potential across the sub region with average radiation of 526 kilowatts per square meter per day throughout the year the establishment of the regional center for renewable energy and energy efficiency is in line with policy decisions at the level of the community whose countries face common problems regarding the energy issue the equal Center for renewable energy and energy efficiency accurate was established by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers following a recommendation of eco ask meeting of energy ministers in guinea-bissau in 2008 the establishment were actually was in response to the region's what are called problems in energy access energy security and environmental concerns at the same time so in establishing a clear if objectives were clearly defined as to promote the region's a socio-economic development in an environmentally benign mana through the promotion and development of energy and energy efficiency technologies the creation of the center is a decisive regional response aiming to meet the specific needs of the ecowas member states in a regional perspective a cliff activities has been focused mainly in for particular areas and area of targeted and eliminating the bodies to the development of diff technologists that is to say capacity building a sensitization and knowledge management finance and employer development so since our establishment actually has embarked on so many activities to ensure the original added value of this institution as an institution of regional dimension actly has so far established to regional policies one in renewable energy and the other on energy efficiency based on this regional energy firm with countries are going to not develop their national policies targeted to their water Pacific needs and conditions and contributing to the world called the regional policy actually is also developing the equus regional energy Observatory that is going to feature what you call interactive maps on renewable energy technologies it is also in line with international policy decisions regarding energy and climate change mitigation promoting the construction of infrastructures that produce clean and sustainable energy while also addressing environmental and climate imperatives thus it will contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals benefiting particularly the populations of rural and peri-urban areas writer use of renewable energy one of the top goals of the regional center for renewable energy and energy efficiency will provide a different better future for millions of women men and children who dream and work for a brighter tomorrow
